Swans

New lake residents

I don’t recall seeing a lot of swanlings, just varying groups of adult swans. Though my recent ability to discern between fowls hasn’t been all that strong, during my first visit to the lake I confused baby mallards for goslings.

As a kid I could differentiate between a heron and a stork. I haven’t learned bird calls yet, I am trying to stave off the aging process.

These swans just happened to be on my running route so I’d see them most days and they were never overly territorial when I’d run past them. The first one arrived in May of 2023 and by December I had left so I am not quite sure if their migration pattern followed my own.

Other photographers occasionally gathered by the swans and I only saw one instance where someone waded a little too close and had to jog away from a parental swan’s charge.

I kept trying to time my visits with golden hour but never really knew which part of the lake the swans would be visiting so I made a lot of laps and after some of my summer runs the extra steps were not something I was aiming to increase.
